So they began wearing lacy jabots and later, Justice Ginsburg acquired a large collection of various styles of collars made of beads, lace, pearls, and metals.

My personal story behind this one: One of a kind, strung on pearls, onyx, and labradorite with a mother of pearl black oyster shell button that came from my grandmother’s sewing basket (there aren’t any other buttons like this in her kit). This evoked for me the countless afternoons spent at the library where grandma would let me check out as many books as I liked while she perused her own stacks. Reading and education for girls and women was a priority for her; my mother told me she started a book club back in the 50’s to teach women to read and recent immigrants to learn English in her Denver home. I am proud to be the granddaughter of an educated Jewish woman of empathy who minimized herself too much and kept some of her greatest strengths hidden from me. Grateful for the memories of her that continue to enlighten me as I age; inside my heart the complex woman she was beyond “Grandma” becomes more real.
